Summer Vehicle Checklist: 8 Essential Kia Maintenance Tasks Before Your Road Trip

Planning a road trip this summer? Before you load up your Kia and hit the highway, make sure your vehicle is ready for the heat, the distance, and the extra weight of passengers and cargo. Whether you’re driving a Kia Sportage, Telluride, EV6, or Seltos, summer conditions can push your vehicle harder than usual.

Here’s a simple 8-point summer maintenance checklist to help you avoid unwanted surprises and ensure a smooth, safe drive. You can do some of these at home—but for complete peace of mind, a visit to the certified technicians at Orléans Kia is always a smart move.

Why Summer Maintenance Is Different

Summer heat, longer drives, and heavier loads all contribute to more wear on your Kia. Hot pavement can increase tire pressure, sustained speeds make fluids work harder, and extra passengers add to brake and engine strain. That’s why a seasonal check-up is key before your next adventure.

1. Tire Pressure and Tread

Tires take a beating during summer. Start by checking the pressure while the tires are cold, and inflate them to the manufacturer’s recommendation (usually found inside the driver’s door). Most Kia models sit between 33 and 36 PSI.

Don’t forget the tread—make sure there’s at least 3.2 mm (or 4/32″) of depth. If the wear looks uneven, it could be time for an alignment.

2. Brake Pad Life and Rotor Condition

Brakes are critical—especially with more passengers and summer traffic. Listen for squealing or grinding, and check that your brake pads have at least 3 mm of material left. You’ll also want to inspect the rotors for any scoring or signs of heat damage.

If your pedal feels soft or vibrates under pressure, have your brakes serviced before hitting the road.

3. Engine Oil and Filter Change

Oil not only lubricates, it helps cool your engine. Summer driving increases engine temperatures, so if you’re due—or close to due—for an oil change, get it done before your trip. Most Kia models recommend a change every 8,000 km or 12 months, whichever comes first.

Use full synthetic oil like 0W-20 for optimal performance in high temperatures.

4. Coolant Level and Radiator Check

Your engine’s coolant is responsible for keeping temperatures in check. Make sure it’s topped off and that the 50/50 coolant-to-water mix is still effective. Check hoses for leaks or bulging and flush the system if it’s been more than 96,000 km.

Don’t open the coolant cap when the engine is hot—let it cool first.

5. Battery Condition and Voltage

Heat can be just as hard on your battery as cold weather. A battery that’s starting to weaken may fail without warning in high temperatures. Have it tested—it should be at 12.4 volts or higher when at rest.

For hybrid and electric Kia models like the EV6, it’s also a good time to inspect the battery coolant loop and charging performance.

6. A/C System and Cabin Filter

No one wants to suffer through a road trip without air conditioning. Make sure your A/C system is blowing cold and that your refrigerant level is topped up. A weak A/C could indicate a leak or low charge. Also, replace your cabin air filter if it hasn’t been changed in the past year.

This simple step will keep your drive cool and your passengers comfortable.

7. Wipers and Washer Fluid

Summer storms can strike unexpectedly. If your wipers streak, skip, or squeak, it’s time to replace them. Top off your windshield washer fluid with a summer formula to handle bugs and dirt. Bring an extra bottle with you just in case.

8. Fluid Top-Ups and Light Check

Finally, make sure all your fluids are full—this includes transmission fluid, power steering (if applicable), brake fluid, and washer fluid. Then walk around your vehicle and test every exterior light: headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and reverse lamps.

While you’re at it, pack your roadside emergency kit: jumper cables, spare tire, first aid supplies, flashlight, and basic tools.

Bonus: Tips for EV and Hybrid Drivers

If you’re driving a Kia EV6, Niro Hybrid, or Sorento Plug-in Hybrid, here are a few extras to keep in mind:

  • Pre-condition the cabin while the vehicle is plugged in to save battery range.
  • Plan your route with fast-charging stations in mind.
  • Have your high-voltage coolant system inspected at your Kia service center.
